Companies Prepare for Energy Reporting Requirements in California

SR Inc has prepared a new advisory, at the request of multiple SBER Member-Clients, on California’s changing energy reporting regulations and their impact on global IT firms. This new advisory describes two evolving California regulations and describes the requirements for energy data reporting for owners and lessees of buildings throughout California, particularly owners and lessees of commercial buildings. 

The two regulations covered in the advisory are:

• AB 1103, which requires utilities to report all energy data for commercial buildings through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, is currently moving toward full implementation.
• AB 758, still in the development stages, may soon increase the available incentive programs and will simplify the disclosure of building performance information through a new labeling scheme, BEARS.

AB 1103 and 758 are basic frameworks for energy disclosure, but their broadness in the regulatory language and their evolving implementation by state commissions and regulatory bodies may lead to stringent reporting requirements as compared to other regulatory environments.
