Sustainability Roundtable Inc

Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG)

Statement of Purpose

Across sectors, there is an opportunity to bring business into a smart and creative alignment with human life and the natural world that sustains us all. People often believe the aims of business and life are fundamentally opposed; after all, the global systems built in the last two centuries have caused climate breakdown which increasingly threatens to undermine the order of life in our time, for all time.

Pioneering companies, including Sustainability Roundtable, Inc. (SR Inc) however, are demonstrating the falsehood of this narrative by profitably committing to be Net-Positive companies who give more than they take in order to help regenerate the people, communities and resources that support their success. By emphasizing respect and reverence for human life and the natural world, this regenerative approach to business promotes human well-being and a stable and healthy environment.  It does this through a needed change in framing, approach and, ultimately, complex systems in order to align business with life.

Businesses can move from seeking greater efficiency in an assumed mechanistic model outside any individual or community to offering greater dignity to employees, customers, investors, suppliers and the communities that support SR Inc. By “offering dignity” rather than “seeking efficiency,” businesses can renew, regenerate, and nourish the human and ecological communities that sustain them.

Rather than just mitigating our negative impacts (such as our small carbon footprint), SR Inc invites stakeholders to move beyond any planned harm towards wholly positive impacts (such as accelerating the growth of renewable energy). We see this work as part of our “handprint” with which we want to make clear our great respect for all of our stakeholders including the natural world that sustains us all as we work to align business with life.

Environment

OUR OPERATIONS

Our geographically distributed team has a small environmental impact, but we strive to minimize that impact even further to zero. To accomplish this, we will:

  1. Commit to being a Carbon Neutral company starting in 2021 and remediate our historic footprint back to our founding in 2008 through certified carbon removal offsets
  2. Limit travel emissions by telecommuting, compensating sustainable commuting, and promoting teleconferencing
  3. Encourage our office space providers to switch to renewable energy and reduce energy, waste, and water usage
  4. Prioritize suppliers with ambitious climate goals and credible pathways to achieving them
  5. Assist employees in reducing work from home emissions through programs such as local renewable energy options, installing solar, or purchasing EVs
  6. Work to advance science-based public policy on climate

OUR WORK

By advising world-leading enterprises on sustainability strategy, our team makes a much greater “handprint” impact than we could through our footprint alone. Through our work with Member-Clients, we aim to:

  1. Help companies integrate sustainability into their brand promise and promote a more sustainable approach to business throughout their global value chains
  2. Advance bold corporate commitments beyond Net Zero Emissions, such as Fossil Fuel Free, Zero Historic Emissions, and being Climate Positive where it makes commercial sense for the client
  3. Help clients use aggregated Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPA 2.0) to help democratize the benefits of utility scale renewable energy with the goal of contracting a gigawatt of renewable energy by 2025
  4. Advance thought leadership on ESG best practice through research and collaboration with Member-Clients, leading non-profits, and government agencies
  5. Work to establish Scope 4 (climate policy impact) as a recognized, necessary part of corporate climate responsibility
  6. Donate 1% of our profits, 1% our founder’s equity, and 1% of SR Inc team time annually to organizations supporting climate policy and environmental justice

Social

SR Inc is committed to protecting and promoting the inviolable and inalienable dignity of every person. Furthermore, SR Inc works to affirmatively identify, enfranchise, and energize the needed genius of traditionally marginalized people and communities. By celebrating the aptitude of every person for positive social meaning, as well as the benefit of the natural world that is beyond commercial value, we can evolve beyond need-based, extractive relationships with people, enterprises, communities and our natural world towards relationships based on care more than need which magnify the unique and creative contributions of every individual, enterprise, community, and our environment.

Governance

SR Inc is committed to creating an environment free from intimidation, harassment, or inappropriate behavior where all stakeholders can feel safe, supported, and included. We seek to be an example of integrity, kindness, and commitment to excellence. Our Governance Policy outlines key areas of commitment in: Corporate Structure; Code of Conduct and Ethics; Anti-Harassment and Non-Discrimination, and; Confidentuality and Data Privacy.
