Sustainability Roundtable Inc. Helps McKesson Bring Solar To The Healthcare Distribution Industry

Founded in 1833, the McKesson Corporation is a San Francisco based Fortune 10 company with global operations.  Sustainability Roundtable Inc.’s (“SR Inc”) Renewable Energy Procurement Services (“REPS”) team was pleased to help McKesson throughout 2017 develop a renewable energy strategy and select multiple renewable energy development partners to assist in the first phase of a multi-phase solar strategy that will install solar technology at several McKesson distribution centers across the U.S.

McKesson’s on-site renewable energy development is part of a broader program to advance greater environmental sustainability at McKesson.  In addition to reducing its carbon footprint through energy efficiency gains in facilities, the company also has programs to recycle, monitor water usage, proactively manage hazardous and regulated waste, and optimize fleet usage to reduce fuel consumption. Several of its facilities are also certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard and WELL (a system that measures features of the built environment impact on human health). To learn more about McKesson’s environmental sustainability efforts, read the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility report.

McKesson’s emerging leadership on renewable energy technology advances its role as a global leader in the healthcare distribution industry.  McKesson is helping to bring the benefit of renewable and advanced energy technologies to a healthcare distribution industry that features massive roofs, parking lots and corporate customers that are health and sustainability conscious.   It is an industry well positioned to benefit substantially from the impressively improving economics of renewable energy technology all around the world.

Roger Freeman, Managing Director, SR Inc’s Renewable Energy Procurement Services

SR Inc REPS team is led by experts with dozens of years of renewable energy development, procurement and contracting experience who worked in conjunction to help McKesson develop a renewable energy strategy integrated with its conventional energy and sustainability strategies.  SR Inc REPS then managed a year-long, multi-stage, competition in the U.S. involving nearly two dozen highly qualified renewable energy developers before selecting two different types of firms for multi-technology and transaction structure Phase I developments in California and New Jersey.

Ali Ahmed, Principal Advisor, SR Inc Renewable Energy Procurement Services

One of the firms McKesson selected for Phase I was NRG Energy which will install solar arrays at a distribution center in Robbinsville, New Jersey.  The facility will be furnished with a combination of rooftop and ground-mounted arrays and will have a capacity of up to three megawatts of electricity.  NRG is committed to working with McKesson and local authorities to deliver the project from initial planning to final installation and is estimated to be fully operational in 2018.

In addition to generating environmental benefits, the solar arrays in Robbinsville will reduce costs for McKesson, producing electricity equal to approximately 74% of the facility’s annual consumption. The estimated electricity produced in one year of the project is equivalent to powering about 400 U.S. homes.   McKesson also awarded multiple additional sites to selected developers at multiple locations in California – including some featuring solar and energy storage – that should create more than 12 MW of solar power in Phase I alone.  And McKesson and SR Inc REPS have already begun qualifying competitors to compete to assist McKesson in a larger Phase II of McKesson’s renewable energy strategy.  The SR Inc REPS team is also advising multiple SR Inc Member-clients and interested high-credit enterprises on multiple, current, Aggregated Procurements of large scale off-site renewable energy in de-regulated whole sale electricity markets in the U.S.
