On March 19th, Sustainability Roundtable, Inc. (SR Inc) convened over 75 Member Executives across Denver, Boston, and virtually for our Q1 Sustainable Business & Enterprise Roundtable (SBER) Executive Symposium. The session provided a candid, practical, and forward-looking forum to advance shared priorities, with breakout discussions generating valuable input and momentum on key initiatives.

We are grateful to our speakers, Andy Smith, Director of Energy, Sustainability, EHS & Technology at Cisco, and Evan Brown, Utilities & Renewable Energy Program Manager at Cisco, for sharing their expertise. Their perspectives on AI strategy and global renewable energy procurement brought clarity and real-world insight to the full group.

Advancing Sustainability Strategy Leadership

Across industries, Member-Clients are navigating increasing complexity in sustainability strategy, driven by evolving regulatory expectations, advancing technologies, and rising stakeholder demands. Key themes included:

• Dignity First Leadership: Introduced in SR Inc’s new book, this emerging paradigm calls for a shift from managing for efficiency to leading in ways that magnify the dignity of all stakeholders—reframing how organizations define performance and impact.
• Strategy Management Discipline: SR Inc experts emphasized the importance of structured, annual strategy management processes that align vision, governance, implementation, and reporting—ensuring sustainability efforts are both coherent and executable.
• Assurance Readiness & Reporting Evolution: Companies continue to prepare for increasing disclosure requirements, with a growing focus on assurance readiness, strengthened risk disclosures, and navigating shifting global reporting frameworks.
• Audit-Ready Data Systems: Organizations are investing in centralized ESG data platforms, clearer ownership structures, and formal controls to ensure consistency and readiness for third-party assurance.
• AI Enablement for Execution: SR Inc introduced its Comprehensive Compliance Collaborative (CCC) and Shared Roundtable Agents to support Mandatory Reporting mastery through AI-enabled, peer-informed insights—accelerating execution while maintaining rigor.
• Cisco’s AI Strategy: Cisco highlighted how targeted AI use cases can simultaneously address rising energy demand while unlocking operational efficiencies and productivity gains.

Corporate Global Decarbonization: Focus on India 

The symposium also explored global renewable energy procurement, with a focus on India as a critical and rapidly evolving market:

• Expanding Corporate Procurement Strategies: Member-Clients are leveraging a range of structures—including physical procurement and VPPAs—to access renewable energy in complex, coal-dependent grids with growing renewable capacity.
• India Market Dynamics: Executives discussed tradeoffs across group captive, open access, and virtual procurement models, balancing cost, complexity, and scalability.
• Cisco Case Study: Cisco shared practical insights on navigating procurement in India, including key considerations for entering new markets and scaling global renewable strategies.
• Aggregated VPPA Progress: SR Inc’s March 5th RFP has generated strong early participation, with continued momentum toward project selection and execution.
• The Power of Collective Action: Aggregation continues to emerge as a critical mechanism for improving market access, pricing, and enabling broader participation across Member-Clients.
